It’s now possible to get a 3D printer (as in making stuff not images in blue and red) for $1500 (Until their 50% discount runs out, but $3000 isn’t that bad either), thanks to PP3DP making the UP! available for sale.

The UP! uses ABS plastic which costs a not insignificant $50/kg to print out a 3D design of your choosing. Depending on the complexity of the design, the printing process can take anywhere between half an hour to an afternoon to complete, and then usually follows with a couple of minutes removing the support structures put in place by the printer itself. What you’re left with is a piece of plastic that looks very similar to what was on screen earlier in the day.

It’s also surprising to see that for something that’s effectively piping lines of melted plastic on a moving tray, it’s able to do so in fairly thin layers, namely 0.25-0.35mm. That’s stupidly thin, meaning that there’s going to be very little in the way of sanding the model afterwards.

If my family is watching this, I want one for Christmas…
